PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

In May, over 500 health promotion and public health education professionals will converge in Washington, D.C. for the 24th National Conference on Health Promotion and Education, jointly sponsored by the CDC and DHPE.  Members of program planning and other conference-related committees have worked hard to develop the conference framework.  This year we have added features intended to increase the opportunity for you to network.  A “networking gala” at the exhibitor reception will allow you to sit with your colleagues in tables grouped according to regions.  This format gives you the opportunity to share and learn from each other.  Attendees who choose to participate and mingle with their peers are encouraged to bring any materials from their states that they would like to share.  An informal gathering with a great opportunity for networking!

How about participating in one of those “special interest dinners?”  Join other attendees on Thursday, May 25th at an informal dinner in an area restaurant.  These dinners are designed to promote networking and discussion of topics among people working in similar areas.  The event requires you to sign up in advance, as each topic area is limited to 10 participants.

Importantly, a line-up of informative sessions awaits you.  I encourage you to attend the plenary sessions focusing on five theme areas: workforce development, the federal perspective of keeping America healthy, legislative directions to enhance public health, collaborating with non-traditional partners and meeting the funding organizations. Pre-conference workshops are definitely of interest to many, whether you are new to your job or a veteran in the field.  They will be held on Tuesday, May 23rd and are designed to provide information on evidence-based public health, communicating with legislators, workforce skill development and working with traditional and non-traditional partners.  Interested in-depth review of program areas? Then don’t miss attending the concurrent sessions.  Finally, meet the national, state and local leaders of the field we have invited to attend the event.

With so many issues and topics affecting our profession, keeping up with all the information out there is impossible, because we also need to run our departments on a day-to-day basis. That’s why these sessions are so important and they come handy because you can learn in a short period of time from those who know them best!

Let me take this opportunity to invite you to attend the 24th National Conference on Health promotion and Education on May 23-26, 2005 in Washington, DC.  Please go to DHPE website to register or to find more information.  See you in D.C.!

Sincerely,

Jim McVay

DHPE President
