PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

A Prosperous New Year to everyone!  Hard to believe that 2005 is history and it seemed characterized by one major event after another.  Sadly, many of these events were tragic in nature and resulted in loss of lives.  However, many of you opened your hearts and rose to the occasion to donate money, time and other resources to those who were unfortunate.  Let’s hope that 2006 promises to be an abundant, safe, peaceful and a thriving year for all of us.

In 2004, DHPE leadership held a strategic planning meeting to set goals, objectives and strategic direction for the following year. The two primary goals were: strengthening membership structure and benefits; and strengthening and sustaining the role of health promotion and education in state & national agencies.  Thanks to the members, whose dedication and their time contribute to DHPE’s accomplishments.  DHPE Membership Services is now fully staffed and has expanded benefits and communication to inform members of current updates and issues of interest.  We have launched a DHPE online newsletter “The Voice,” which was well-received; and more projects are ongoing.  We sponsored a successful national conference with our partner, CDC last May 2005 and through satellite broadcasts of some segments, DHPE was able to reach a vast audience.  The minority health program has taken off since its inception in 2002, gaining more applicants.  Program activities such as physical activity collaborative, school health initiative, worksite wellness in schools and other training & professional development programs have all been successfully launched.  Several joint projects with CDC and other partners were also undertaken and completed and released, with some still in process.

While there were many approaches to measure success, DHPE’s record is impressive. We were on target in accomplishing our goals and objectives and have put plans into action.  We have met many challenges, although many more difficult ones are still ahead.  As always, we are ready to meet them and "roll-up our sleeves" once again.

Finally, let me tell you about Charlie Brown of the cartoon “Peanuts.”  I remembered that one time, he was shooting his bow and arrow and wherever the arrow landed, Charlie draws a circle around it with a chalk and pretends he hit the target.  Might have worked for Charlie Brown, but not for DHPE.  We have our “ducks in a row,” so to speak, with an attainable target and determination to ensure "our arrow" lands very close to the bullseye, if not right into it. That’s DHPE’s key to success.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Jim McVay

DHPE President
