PRESIDENT’S
MESSAGE
As I wind down my term as your president, I
can’t help but think about the three “Cs” that
solidified DHPE's accomplishments this past year.
Its success will not be possible without “Commitment,
Collaboration and Cooperation" between DHPE and
other parties. When these three components are
combined, outstanding and successful accomplishments follow.
The commitment that exists between DHPE and its members
was evident in their involvement to secure support to an
amendment to Senate FY 2007 Budget Resolution, resulting in an
additional $7 billion for health and education.
DHPE’s collaboration with CDC in
many programs and activities has been very successful in
furthering the profession and the practice of health promotion and
health education. Collaboration also
exists between DHPE and several associations that produced
informative programs and training courses; resulting
in enhanced health promotion and public health
education. DHPE’s cooperation with Capitol Hill lawmakers
and the association's non-adversarial relationship with
congressional staff members allowed our concerns and advocacy issues
to be “heard’. Of course, there are many,
many more examples of DHPE accomplishments and space is simply not
enough for me to list all of them!
I
want to thank DHPE and its members, for making my term fruitful
and enjoyable; and for trusting me to lead the association. It made
my job easier knowing that you were with me to enjoy our
success and also there during difficult
challenges. I am amazed as to how we
have made advances in health promotion and education; steering
our profession’s strategic direction to some far-reaching
implications for the future. One of the highlights
of my term is getting to know and meeting many of you, and finding
out that we have similar concerns and issues, as well as
the zeal to seek ways to develop unique and
resourceful programs in our
states.
Finally,
I want to encourage everyone to get involved with DHPE;
participate in various committees and workgroups and volunteer
in projects; because each of us can make a
difference. I was fortunate to have
been given the opportunity. It was an
extraordinary experience.
Thank
you for supporting DHPE.
Sincerely,

Jim
McVay

Chronic Disease in Health Emergencies:
Post-Katrina The
April 2006 issue of CDC’s journal, Preventing Chronic Disease
(PCD) featured an original research entitled “Chronic Disease in
Health Emergencies: In the Eye of the Hurricane.”
After Katrina, public health and the medical community
expressed serious concerns on dealing with infectious diseases,
injuries and environmental risks while trying to preserve the
lives of those affected. PCD published an
excellent abstract on a surveillance system that can provide useful
baseline information both in numbers and treatment of people with
chronic diseases in the aftermath of a disaster.

FOCUS ON
PREVENTION RESEARCH CENTERS

Understanding
Prevention Research Centers
Beginning
this month's issue of the newsletter, DHPE is adding a
section called “Focus on
Prevention Research Centers.” Managed by the
Center for Disease Control and Prevention as a cooperative
agreement, a PRC, as it is commonly known, is a network of academic
researchers, public health agencies and community members that
conducts applied research in disease prevention and control.
In addition, PRCs enable the CDC to fund extramural research centers
adding to knowledge on prevention and control of chronic
diseases. To fully understand the program’s depth and unique
nature, scope and reach, history, framework and how to
become a PRC, please visit http://www.cdc.gov/prc.
This
new newsletter section will feature updates, news,
articles and interviews related to PRCs.
