The effort focuses primarily on physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco prevention among youth through the use of the CSHP model. The School Health Work Group completed a 2001 needs assessment of the DHPE membership to determine the current status, structure, strengths and barriers to successful coordinated school health programs. The assessment identified several focus areas for capacity building among DHPE members. The top three areas of interest, as indicated by members, were 1) training in school health policies, 2) assistance in working with state education agency partners, and 3) resource development and program dissemination related to the eighth component of the CSHP model - staff wellness promotion in schools for faculty and staff. The School Health Work Group is also a member of a the "School Health Collaborative," which includes the following partners: the Chronic Disease Directors (CDD) , The Society of State Directors of Health Physical Education, and Recreation (SSDHPER), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH). Through this collaboration, the School Health Workgroup helped develop the School Business Resource Kit, a tool designed to provide access to the most timely and relevant resources available for coordinated school health programs.
