DHPE members have long been involved in health
promotion and health education efforts in schools and communities. In October,
2000, DHPE received supplemental funding from the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, Division of Adolescent and School
Health (DASH) for a five year effort to support physical activity,
nutrition, and tobacco prevention (PANT) efforts among youth through
Coordinated School Health Programs (CSHP). The goal of the
initiative is to build the capacity of DHPE and state health
agencies to support CSHP in school settings to reduce these priority
risk behaviors and promote healthy behaviors among youth.
The
DHPE School Health Workgroup was formed in 2000 to
lead the initiative. The Workgroup began its efforts by conducting
a membership needs assessment to determine the current status,
structure, strengths, and barriers to successful CSHP. Based on the
results of the
2001 School Health Needs Assessment* [PDF File, 168 Kb]
identified 3 priority areas of interest in school health. These
are:
Training in School Health Policies
State Health Agency
(SHA) and State Education Agency (SEA) partnerships
Staff Wellness promotion in schools
See Projects and School Health Events for upcoming related trainings and products.
DHPE is also a member of the School Health Collaborative, a partnership focusing on addressing chronic
disease risk reduction and health promotion in the school-aged
population with the school setting and the school community as the
focus for education and intervention. See the School Health
Collaborative for more information.

2001 DHPE Membership School Health
Needs Assessment [PDF File, 168 Kb]
This membership assessment, conducted in collaboration with the
Chronic Disease Directors (CDD), examined the status, structure,
strengths, and barriers to successful CSHP. The assessment also
examines relationships between SHAs and SEAs.
School Health Business Kit
DHPE, in collaboration with CDD, helped develop a School
Business Resource Kit that provides convenient access to the most
valuable resources for learning more about CSHP. 2 kits were
provided at no cost to each DHPE member for use in their state.
To order more kits and hear about how other members are using the
kits, visit

In 2001, DHPE awarded 5 mini-grants to DHPE members for

supported SHA efforts to expand the training of public health
education and health promotion practitioners in the area of CSHP.
