  • Policy and Environmental Change, New Directions for Public Health
Policy and Environmental Change, New Directions for Public Health is a valuable resource in designing and implementing policy and environmental change interventions that impact large segments of the population. Policies and environmental changes can affect the chronic disease risk of many people simultaneously (e.g., by eliminating exposure to secondhand smoke in public buildings; making low-fat choices in cafeterias). This document provides information about the use of policy and environmental change interventions by public health agencies in the United States and a full list of recommendations developed through a review of literature, key informant interviews, a review of Internet sites, and a nationwide written assessment.

  • Assessment of State Capacity for Comprehensive Nutrition and Physical Activity Programs
Since one of the first indications of state public health agency response to emerging public health problems is the development of state-level disease prevention and health promotion plans, this assessment, An Assessment of State Capacity for Comprehensive Nutrition and Physical Activity Programs, was designed to determine planning and implementation activity to reduce the public health impact of the growing obesity problem. Specifically, this assessment describes organizational factors associated with nutrition and physical activity programs in state health agencies; assesses the capacity of state health agencies to address recommended components of a state-based, comprehensive nutrition and physical activity program; and assesses state technical assistance and program guidance needs.
