Public Health Education Leadership Institute (PHELI)
Facts About the Public Health Education Leadership Institute
PHELI Content:
- Fellows complete and analyze leadership practices inventories
and Myers-Briggs personality type indicators.
- Public health education competencies covered include identifying
and articulating emerging health issues, using health education
intervention models to achieve health promotion objectives, and planning
with a long view toward health education.
- On-site sessions teach skills such as systems thinking, scenario
planning, and working with partner organizations and teams.
- Fellows choose projects from their work for case study and
then apply leadership principles toward setting objectives, thereby
enhancing day-to-day work life.
PHELI Facts:
- The call for applications for the following year's cycle
is released in the fall.
- Fellows are selected in February.
- The first on-site session for the institute is in the spring. Graduation is held the following spring.
- Up to 20 fellows are selected to participate in each class.
- Three on-site meetings of three days each are required:
inaugural session, mid-term session, and graduation/capstone session.
- Time commitment varies by student; assigned readings will
take several hours to complete before each of the first two sessions.
- Tuition cost is $6,000; partial and full scholarships are available from sponsoring organizations
- Each applicant must be associated with one of the three sponsors or
designated by their voting members.
PHELI Sponsors and Organizations Involved:
- The institute receives support from the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention
and Health Promotion.
- The curriculum has been developed in collaboration with St. Louis
University, which is contracted for program delivery. PHELI began in
1998.
- DHPE co-sponsors the institute with the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE).
