School Employee Wellness

Building the capacity of public health organizations to influence systems and environmental change on a population basis requires that they work collaboratively with major institutions such as schools and workplaces.  DHPE can help states and communities work more effectively with the schools in their jurisdictions to improve the health and safety of both the students and of those who work in schools.

The Directors of Health Promotion and Education (DHPE) has provided tools and resources for implementing SEW programs since 2004.   DHPE’s School Employee Wellness: A Guide for Protecting the Assets of Our Nation’s Schools provides step by step guidance for implementing school employee wellness programs. DHPE’s previous SEW awards program recognized school districts that demonstrate commitment to the health of their employees by implementing school employee wellness programs. The Guide and its nine steps for establishing a school employee wellness program serve as the basis for the awards program.   SEW materials and other resources developed by award-winning schools are available here.  By joining DHPE’s SEW group, you can interact with others interested in or implementing employee wellness programs in their schools.   Video success stories illustrate the benefits of employee wellness programs to both employees and employers.

Another way that DHPE can support the public’s health through schools is by training school health professionals in the competencies needed for effective Health Policy and Environmental Change using DHPE’s Shaping Policy for Health™ competency based trainings.
