Curriculum Developers and Master Trainers of Systems Change for Health Curriculum

Jim Emery

James (Jim) Emery, MPH

James (Jim) Emery, is Master Trainer and Developer of the Systems Change for Health curriculum. He is a Research Associate in the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. Jim’s main professional interest is to help communities improve their physical and social environments for healthy living. To that end, he enjoys integrating theories and methods from several disciplines including: public health, public policy, public administration and urban planning. Jim is leading the development of a competency-based curriculum that will help the public health workforce improve policies, built environments and systems to address public health problems. Jim has consulted on projects with AARP, Directors of Health Promotion and Education (DHPE), NC Division of Public Health, and other state and local non-profits to help local communities improve their political, social and physical environments. He developed tools and a guidebook for communities who want to audit the walkability and bikeability of their local streets ( Jim designs and facilitates transdisciplinary courses for federal, state and local professionals that combine public health, public policy, and urban planning strategies. Jim is a member of APHA and SOPHE.

Carolyn Crump Carolyn Crump, PhD

Carolyn Crump, is a Master Trainer and Developer of the Systems Change for Health curriculum. She is a research associate professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and has over 25 years of experience working with organizations and community-based groups to address health promotion and injury prevention. Dr. Crump has expertise in strategic planning and community-based efforts to promote physical activity through policy and environmental change and preventing injury especially among Native American populations. She has conducted large research and evaluation projects for the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, North Carolina Dept. of Public Health, the Indian Health Service, and AARP. Dr. Crump is currently helping develop competencies and curriculum for training the public health workforce on policy, environmental and systems-change solutions for public health problems. Dr. Crump has designed over 30 courses and retreats that have used adult learning principles to successfully reach the target audience. She has taught graduate courses in Program Planning and Evaluation and Program Management, two of the required courses for the MPH students in the Department of HBHE. Dr. Crump is an active member of APHA and SOPHE.

Jayne Andreen

Jayne Andreen, BA

Jayne Andreen, is the Community Health Promotion and Improvement Manager for the Alaska Division of Public Health. She has 30 years’ experience training and advocating for community development and policy change in the domestic violence, sexual assault and public health arenas. She oversaw Alaska’s Health Promotion Unit, including Community Preventive Services, the Health Survey Lab, the Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant, School Health, Cardiovascular Health Program, Obesity Prevention and Control, and Tobacco Prevention and Control. She is a past president of the Alaska Health Education Consortium and the Alaska Public Health Association, as well as past president DHPE. Her current responsibilities focus on providing training, technical assistance and consultation on community organizing and development, community health assessment, planning, and evaluation. She is active in several statewide task forces, working groups and collaborative efforts. In addition to public health, She has a BA in Psychology/Counseling from Winona State University and is a graduate of the Public Health Education Leadership Institute.

Nancy E. Berger, MPH

Nancy E. Berger is a public health consultant based in Connecticut. Her background includes 30 years’ experience developing health promotion and education programs, policies, and training in the Connecticut Department of Public Health. She has had leadership responsibilities for programs that span the lifecycle. Her most recent focus has been on health equity. As Director of the Office of Multicultural Health, Nancy founded and chaired the Connecticut Multicultural Health Partnership.

Nancy lives in West Hartford, CT, and is approved to train our Introductory course and Courses 1 through 5 of our skills-based courses.

Aryka Chapman

Aryka Chapman

Aryka Chapman is a public health consultant and previous School Health Manager at DHPE. Her background includes a variety of school and youth health advocacy including acting as the HIV Program Director for the DC school system as well as planning and organizing the Ryan White Youth Conference on HIV & AIDS for the National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA). She has worked in public health for over 20 years, beginning in high school as a peer educator for Planned Parenthood.

Aryka lives in Washington, DC and is approved to train our Introductory course and Courses 1, 2, 4 and 5 of our skills-based courses.

Jacqueline Coleman

Jacqueline Coleman, M.Ed, MSM

Jacqueline Coleman is the Principal & Owner of Vision Que! LLC, a minority-owned consulting practice in Washington, D.C. specializing in myriad systems based ap­proaches and high performance capacity building support. She has extensive experience as a senior program manager and administrator in workforce development and training of professionals in Social Services and Public Health arenas. Jacqueline has a 20+ year track record assisting public health (domestic and global), private, governmental, and non-governmental leaders in maximizing their service impacts to clients and consumers. Strategic consultations and focal areas include gender-tailored programs, health equity initiatives, racial and ethnic health disparities, policy development, and advocacy.

Jacqueline resides in Washington, DC and is approved to train our Introductory course and Courses 1, 4 and 5 of our skills-based courses.

Karma Edwards

Karma Edwards, MSPH; NSCA-CPT

Karma Edwards has 10 years of community public health experience in multiple counties in North Carolina, where she served as a Health Education Specialist before transitioning into leadership positions as a Director of Health Education/Promotion and Community Health Administrator. Her supervisory experience includes leadership and staff development for health education, public information, data analysis, and WIC employees. Roughly 80% of this tenure was spent working to prevent and reduce chronic diseases through establishing policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) changes on the local level. Additionally, she served in an advisory capacity to the NC Department of Health’s Physical Activity and Nutrition Branch and Western North Carolina public health region in the areas of chronic disease prevention, community mobilization, capacity-building, coalition leadership, process management, and project monitoring. In her most recent efforts, she served as a public health consultant for the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD), where she coordinated NACDD’s ACHIEVE team and managed NACDD’s HOPE project. With both of these positions, she provided technical assistance to 48 communities and one US territory that were funded by the CDC Healthy Communities Program. Chronic diseases of focus have included overweight/obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Her experiences conducting presentations, health education seminars, and workshops on these diseases, as well as her experiences establishing disparity-focused and minority health task forces, coalitions, and councils have enabled her to be a resource at the local, state, and national level for a variety of chronic disease and disparate topics.

Gloria Latimer, EdS

Gloria Latimer is a health promotion and policy consultant in Colorado. Her background includes programmatic and administrative positions in health promotion and chronic disease with the Colorado Department of Public Health and local public health departments. She is a past President of the Colorado Public Health Association and the Southern Colorado AIDS Project. She worked for the state health department in Colorado from 1992 to 2009. Her accomplishments included serving as Chronic Disease Director and leading the state’s participation in the CDC pilot project on chronic disease integration. Ms. Latimer’s background includes serving as a Field Director for the American Stop Smoking Intervention Study (ASSIST), Director of Community Programs for the State Tobacco Education and Prevention Partnership, Program Director for the Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program, Director of the Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease and Pulmonary Disease Grants Program. In addition to her work at the state level, Ms. Latimer has experience working in local public health settings and serving on numerous community boards of directors. She received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Central Missouri State University, and an Education Specialist degree in Administration from Ft. Hays State University.

Patricia Lichiello, MA

Patricia Lichiello is the interim director of the Health Policy Center in the University of Washington School of Public Health, Department of Health Services. She is an affiliate faculty member in the department with primary teaching responsibility in the Executive MPH program. Her career includes 20 years of experience conducting policy research, analysis, and facilitation for stakeholders across the health system at the local, state, and national levels. She developed the university's Safe Table Forums, which are topic-specific learning and discussion forums for stakeholders across Washington State's health system. Ms. Lichiello holds an MA in Urban Planning from the UCLA Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning and received her BA from the New York State University College at Oneonta.

Patricia lives in Seattle, WA, and is approved to train our Introductory course and Courses 1, 2, and 3 of our skills-based courses.

Ali Maffey

Ali Maffey, MSW

Ali Maffey works as the Policy and Communication Unit Supervisor at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment on issues such as suicide, motor vehicle injury, prescription drug overdose prevention and retail marijuana education. She is a former professional development consultant for RMC Health assisting NGOs and state and local education or public health agencies to strengthen the delivery of professional development designed to improve school health environments. Prior to RMC Health, Ali worked as an HIV/AIDS care coordinator in Indiana, a youth worker with street children in Costa Rica, and as a community health educator with a local public health agency in Colorado. During her time in local public health, Ali assisted with the implementation of statewide and organizational tobacco control policies and school or district level suicide prevention and response policies. She served as a community educator and media liaison for a variety of public health issues. Ali also served as a regional trainer for emergency preparedness and response, helping her local public health agency receive Project Public Health Ready recognition from NACCHO. Ali holds both Bachelor's and Master’s degrees in Social Work, attending the University of Denver for her Master’s where she specialized in Community Development and Latino/a studies.

Ali lives in the Denver, CO, area and is approved to train our Introductory course and Courses 1, 2, 4 and 5 of our skills-based courses.

Carolyn Thompson Carolyn Thompson, MA

Carolyn Thompson has 20 years of public health experience. She has worked for the Mississippi, Maryland and District of Columbia Departments of Health where she managed and directed chronic disease, HIV/AIDS prevention and control programs and HIV/AIDS surveillance activities. She has also provided technical and capacity building assistance to health departments and community based organizations through her employment with the Academy for Educational Development, Jackson, State University and the National Minority AIDS Council. Ms. Thompson currently is President of Global Public Health Solutions, a company she has formed to continue her public health career as a national and international consultant that focuses on organizational development, strategic planning, capacity building, financial management, health policy analysis and development and issues of workforce training and development.

Carolyn lives in Waldorf, MD, and is approved to train our Introductory course and Courses 1, 2, 4 and 5 of our skills-based courses.
