#1. When are internships offered and how do I apply for an internship position?

DHPE offers internships for the fall, spring, and summer. Please read the internship announcement completelyfor details about the internship application process. Visit, https://dhpe.site-ym.com/?page=Interns_About , create an account within the internship management system and follow the 4 steps.

#2. Who is eligible to participate in the internship program?

Applicants must be currently enrolled in a minority-serving institution of higher education at the undergraduate or masters level and be in good academic standing at their institution. International students may participate in the internship program if they submit a student visa with the application materials.

#3. If my school is not a minority serving institution, may I still apply for an internship?

No. Only students enrolled in a minority serving institution of higher education are eligible to participate in the internship program. For a listing of minority serving institutions of higher education, visit the US Department of Education at: http://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ocr/edlite-minorityinst.html

#4. What happens after I submit my application?

Once the application period closes for a specific internship, our selection team reviews all application materials and refers the applicants who most closely met the criteria for the internship scope of work to the internship preceptor. That preceptor will review the referred applicants and select individuals for interview. DHPE will contact all individuals selected by the preceptor to arrange interviews. Once interviews are complete, DHPE will notify the finalist(s) of their selection. DHPE will notify all applicants that a preceptor decision has been made.

#5. Should I call or email DHPE to follow up on my application?

It is not necessary to call or email to follow up as long as you received a confirmation email from DHPE’s online internship management system acknowledging receipt of your application materials (this email is automatically generated by the internship management system).

To receive email updates on the internships for which you have applied, include info@dhpe.org on your email’s safe list to ensure that your spam filter does not filter out DHPE’s messages. If you do not receive an email update from us after changing your settings, you may contact us at info@dhpe.org to inquire about the status of your application.

#6. How will I know that DHPE has received my references?

The internship management system automatically generates emails when references are submitted.

#7. May my recommender submit recommendations by email or postal mail?

DHPE encourages all application materials to be submitted through the internship management information system. If your recommender is unable to submit a letter through the management system, an email letter of recommendation may be sent to info@dhpe.org

#8. Why haven’t I heard back from DHPE after submitting my application online?

DHPE’s information management system sends all applicants two emails during an internship’s recruitment period: (1) confirmation of online applications when they are submitted and (2) final outcome of applications. Those who are selected for interviews, reference checks, and other steps in the selection process will receive additional communications from the program. Due to the volume of applications we receive, it is not possible to individually update every applicant of their application status.

#9. May I update my profile after I have submitted my application?

Yes. You are still able to change items in your profile even after the application period closed. Just login on the main web page and click "profile.”

#10. If I am not selected for an internship, do I need do submit a new application for another internship position?

Yes.

#11. May I participate in the internship program after I have graduated from my academic program?

No. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a minority-serving institution of higher education.

#12. How does DHPE determine compensation?

DHPE established a fixed wage for each internship level. Undergraduate interns are paid $12/hour and graduate students are paid $15/hour. Interns may work up to 40 hours/week during the 12 week internship session. The maximum amount of paid hours during an internship session is 480 hours.

#13. What types of benefits do interns receive?

Interns are not employees of DHPE and do not receive any mandatory or discretionary benefits.

#14. Is housing provided as part of the internship?

Housing is not provided.

#15. Can I get academic credit for the internship?

That is a decision of your school. Many will grant academic credit for the internship. You must ask at your school. If needed, DHPE can submit letters or sign memoranda of understanding with an academic institution.

#16. Who will be my supervisor?

A DHPE staff member will supervise all interns for the program. On site, interns will have a preceptor who will guide day-to-day activities as outlined in the internship description. Interns are expected to participate in the activities at their placement site as well as the DHPE internship program-wide activities.
