#1. How do I apply for a fellowship?

Each January, the Directors of Health Promotion and Education (DHPE) announces fellowship positions on our website at https://dhpe.site-ym.com/?page=Fellows_About. Please read the fellowship announcement completelyfor details about the fellowship application process.

#2. What happens after I submit my application?

Once the application period closes for a specific fellowship, DHPE’s selection team reviews all application materials and refers the applicants who most closely meet the criteria for the fellowship scope of work to the State Health Agency’s preceptor. That preceptor reviews the referred applications and selects individuals for interview. DHPE contacts all individuals selected by a preceptor to arrange interviews. After the interview process, DHPE notifies the finalist(s) of their selection and notifies the other applicants that a preceptor decision was made.

#3. How will I know that DHPE has received my references?

You do not need to submit references unless you are selected as a finalist. DHPE will check references only of those selected as a finalist for a fellowship.

#4. Why haven’t I heard back from DHPE after submitting my fellowship application?

DHPE sends all applicants two emails during the fellowship’s recruitment period: (1) a confirmation acknowledging receipt of application materials (via email, fax or postal mail), and (2) notification about the final decision on your application. Those who are selected for interviews, reference checks, and other steps in the selection process will receive additional communications from the program. Due to the volume of applications we receive, DHPE does not individually update every applicant of their application status.

#5. If not selected for a fellowship, do I need do submit a new application for another fellowship position?

Yes. If you meet the eligibility requirements, you may apply for another opportunity.

#6. How is compensation determined?

As a private sector employer, DHPE established a fixed wage for each fellowship based on the finalist’s education and work experience. DHPE pays Fellows up to $50,000 annually by stipend.

#7. What types of benefits do fellows receive?

Fellows are not employees of DHPE. Fellows will receive a monthly stipend for their work plus a monthly stipend to cover health insurance. Additionally to the extent funding permits, fellows receive professional development and support to attend public health conferences and DHPE’s Shaping Policy for Health™ training.

#8. If I apply for one fellowship, will I automatically be considered for others?

Since each fellowship has unique qualifications and requirements, each requires a separate application. You should indicate which fellowship position(s) you are applying for on your application.

#9. How are fellowship sites determined?

DHPE invites state health agencies to request a fellow. DHPE’s selection team reviews SHA applications and uses a fellowship site application scoring matrix to select fellowship sites.

#10. Do I have to be a US citizen to participate in the fellowship program?

Due to the nature of the fellowship work responsibilities and relationships, some fellowships require specific citizenship status. Postings for each fellowship indicate any requirements for citizenship or permanent resident status.

#11. Who will be my supervisor?

A DHPE staff member will supervise all fellows for the program. On site, fellows will have a preceptor who will guide day-to-day activities as outlined in the fellowship announcement. Fellows are expected to participate in the activities at their placement site as well as the DHPE fellowship program-wide activities. Is housing provided as part of the fellowship?

Housing is not provided.
