from Ebony Andrews:

As the reigning Miss Black Maryland USA 2012, I have been granted an amazing opportunity that will not only enable me to further to grow personally but continue my professional development. As a 25 year old recent graduate that are not many arenas that encourage and support young women of color to pursue platforms based on their own genuine interest. However, the Miss Black USA Pageant and Scholarship Foundation is allowing me to just that. As a young public health professional that is passionate about community health, I have found a role that enables me to make great use of my knowledge, training and passion through planning and supporting health focused programs within my community and the state of Maryland. Through consistently and diligently working to promote my platform "Health Starts at Home: Working to revitalize health by bringing advocacy, education and support to our communities," I have been fortunate to work with numerous community organizations, non-profits, national campaigns and the Maryland State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene around various health and wellness initiatives. These experiences have truly allowed me to promote the same principles of health education and health promotion that I learned as a Master of Public Health student at Morehouse School of Medicine and an intern of the Directors of Health Education and Health Promotion Program. This work has served as an incredible reminder of the value of my past experiences that continuously placed me in various settings, working in partnerships with community residents, stakeholder and advocates around real health issues. As, I continue to work around the critical issues of public health, especially health disparities and social determinants of health, I have the luxury of knowing that I have not only been thoroughly prepared to conduct this work but, I also still have the support of the mentors that created such amazing opportunities for me in the past, the directors and staff of DHPE.
