Special Offer: Make SOPHE Your New Professional Home

As a public health professional, you understand how critical it is -- now more than ever -- to stay abreast of health policy and system changes that advance health promotion. For 71 years, the Directors of Health Promotion and Education (DHPE) have been working tirelessly to advance health policy and systems changes needed to improve the health of all and to achieve health equity. The membership of DHPE voted earlier this year to dissolve DHPE. Their anticipated closure is December 31, 2017.

As DHPE makes an organizational shift in the coming months, it’s important that you find your future professional home that preserves DHPE’s legacy and advances your future career. We hope that you’ll consider Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) as that home for your professional affiliation.

Both DHPE and SOPHE have been working side by side for more than two decades to advance policy, system and environmental changes needed to help keep the public healthy.

Building on principles and practices of health promotion and education, DHPE worked to strengthen public health capacity in state and local health departments across the country. They conducted the Systems Change for Health (SCH) courses on policy, systems and environmental change through over 300 trainings in 43 states to over 7,600 participants, including CDC Project Officers. These courses align with the core functions and 10 essential services of public health, and cover 21 competencies that public health practitioners need to effectively implement systems change. As an approved provider of continuing education contact hours (CECH), Category I in health education by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. (NCHEC), these courses offer between 11.5 CECH (11 of 11.5 are advanced-level MCHES) and 12 CECH (12 of 12 are advanced-level MCHES). These courses enabled so many of you to have a dedicated avenue for maintaining your credentialing.

We do not want you to miss any future training offerings and opportunities to communicate with your peers in health promotion and health education. Therefore, DHPE supports and encourages you to become a member of SOPHE.

SOPHE represents more than 4,000 health education professionals and students in the United States and 25 international countries who work in schools, universities, voluntary organizations, healthcare settings, and in local, state and federal agencies. The Society is the only independent voice for advancing health promotion policy, research and practice, and sponsors an annual Health Education Advocacy Summit.
