DHPE Celebrates Health Equity Day

Celebrated on April 5th, Health Equity Day is an inclusive initiative recognizing and reflecting on the need to achieve health equity in the United States. Taking place during National Minority Health Month, Health Equity Day is intended to raise awareness about health disparities in the US and the role that social determinants of health play in health disparities, with the goal of achieving health equity.
Directors of Health Promotion and Education (DHPE) has joined with the Region III Regional Health Equity Council (RHEC) of the US Department of Health and Human Services to recognize Health Equity Day by hosting a webinar on Diversifying Lupus Clinical Trials by Dr. Priscilla Pemu, MD, MSCR, FACP, Director of Clinical Trials at Morehouse School of Medicine Clinical Research Center and Dr. Anca Askanase, Clinical Director at the Lupus Center at New York Presbyterian and Columbia University Medical Center.
In observance of National Public Health Week and National Minority Health Month, the DHPE LEAP: Lupus Education and Awareness for Patients, Professionals and Providers Program Director Dr. Steve Owens, who is a member of the Region III RHEC, will lead the one-hour webinar at 1 pm EST that offer 1-hour of continuing education units for certified health education specialists.
The webinar will explore historical barriers to minority participation in clinical trials; discuss culturally appropriate strategies to recruiting minorities into clinical trials; list current lupus clinical trials; and discuss the importance of women of color participating in lupus clinical trials.
