Site visits for the DHPE Internship 2015 Spring Cohort have begun in Baton Rouge, Louisiana with Intern Brianna Johnson. She is the second student from Grambling State University to participate in the DHPE Internship Program, and her internship site, Our Lady of the Lake Health System (OLOL), is a new placement site for DHPE.
Preceptor Randee Rousseau, who is the OLOL Community Advocacy outreach coordinator and Brianna’s immediate supervisor, along with Preceptor Monique Marion, the Community Advocacy manager, are two of the system’s 8,000 employees. OLOL is one of the largest private medical centers in Louisiana and is a leading healthcare provider in the southern part of the state, covering 11 parishes. It operates under the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System and comprises of a network of hospitals, clinics, providers, nursing centers and integrated care agencies.
The OLOL Community Advocacy Department is responsible for patient engagement, community outreach, health education and the system’s community health assessment plan. The last assessment completed was in 2012, and the department is currently starting the process to complete its next assessment. Brianna has been assigned to assist with this process. Randee and Monique have assigned Brianna the task of creating health education tabletop displays and toolkits to be utilized during her internship and beyond at external and internal health fairs, for patient education in clinic waiting rooms and at partner events. Brianna has decided to create toolkits on the following health areas: Obesity; Heart Disease/High Blood Pressure/Stroke; Diabetes; Cancer; Depression/Mental Health/ Substance Abuse; and Alzheimer’s disease.
Brianna had the opportunity to attend the two-day DHPE Shaping Policy for Health (SPH) Course 3 training hosted by the Louisiana Department of Health & Hospitals after her site visit, along with two DHPE Fellows from Cohort IV. She will translate the skills from the training to the OLOL Advocacy Department.
DHPE Fellow Kristen Hernandez, who is placed at Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, assisted with the coordination of the SPH Course 3 training held January 27-28 at the Department. She actually served as the host by handling registration, setting up the room and providing the introduction for the training. Arkansas DHPE Fellow Rahma Mkuu also attended the SPH Course 3 training, along with Intern Brianna.
