On Wednesday, October 1, 2014 DHPE's Doreleena Sammons Hackett, S.M. attended an event where the Rural Childhood Obesity Prevention Toolkit was unveiled at a Congressional Briefing: Preventing Childhood Obesity in Rural America at the Cannon House Office Building in Washington, DC. The speakers were: Dr. Maya Rockeymoore, Director of Leadership for Healthy Communities; John Weidman, Deputy Executive Director for The Food Trust; Representative Scott M. Simon, Louisiana House of Representatives, District 74; Katie Adamson, Senior Director of health Partnerships and Policy at the YMCA of the USA; and, Senator Benny Shendo, Jr., member of the Jemez Pueblo Tribe and the New Mexico State Senate, District 22.

"Leadership for Healthy Communities is a national program office of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation who developed the Rural Childhood Obesity Prevention Toolkit to help state and local state leaders advance innovative, evidence-informed strategies for improving health in rural towns, counties, tribal lands and schools.”

The Honorable Dwight Evans, State Representative from the 203rd Legislative District in Pennsylvania surprised the packed house audience by attending. He worked with The Food Trust, located in Philadelphia, PA, and the Reinvestment Fund to pioneer the Fresh Foods Financing Initiatives (FFFIs)  model in PA "to take on the daunting challenges to healthy food access in lox-income areas.”
