The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) released a legislative report encouraging the state to directly address health inequities. The report, "Advancing Health Equity in Minnesota: Report to the Legislature," notes that some of the nation's worst health inequities hide behind Minnesota's mostly positive health rankings. Its recommendations include:

  • Examine structural inequities in all department decisions and policies moving forward and encourage other state agencies to do the same.
  • Increase statewide reporting and collection of data related to health equity. Data should be disaggregated into more racial, ethnic, and linguistic groups to accurately reveal community reality.
  • Increase hiring of people with expertise working with communities of color and American Indians. Increase engagement with communities of color and American Indians.
  • Create a Minnesota Center for Health Equity that will work to institute the report's recommendations. (MDH is in the process of setting up a health equity center.)
  • Adjust the grantmaking process to allow groups most qualified to work in communities of color to obtain funding.
