Introducing DHPE Fellow Tiffany Cox
Friday, December 13, 2013
I am a DHPE Fellow at the Connecticut Department of Public Health. I completed a Master of Public Health degree in the spring 2013 at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. Since beginning the fellowship, I have experienced different facets of public health. From working in state government, I am gaining a better understanding of the interrelationship between federal, state and local programs. Navigating these levels of public health is a necessary skill for success.
Two of the projects I am involved with are the state Coordinated Chronic Disease Prevention Plan and the State Partnership Grant to Improve Minority Health. With these projects, I am conducting a policy scan to identify state policies to achieve the objectives in 12 chronic disease priority areas. The overarching goal is to coordinate the state's chronic disease programs. Also, I am working as lead staff for the Social Determinants of Health Task Force, which is one of the projects outlined in the State Partnership Grant. Activities include researching the social determinants that contribute to cancer, cardiovascular disease, low birth weight babies and infant mortality. I was recently invited to be a member of the state's Coalition to Improve Birth Outcomes. This is exciting as many states have a state health plan, but few have one specific to improving birth outcomes. I have also participated in conferences and trainings such as the annual American Public Health Association conference and DHPE's Shaping Policy for HealthTM training.
As a DHPE fellow, I am learning and experiencing public health in a dynamic and comprehensive way. The fellowship has provided me with several opportunities for skill building, networking and professional growth. It has created a smooth transition from academic public health to the practice of public health. I am being prepared for a successful career as a public health professional in which I will be able to promote health equity and improve population health through policy, systems, and environmental change.
Tiffany Cox is a Cohort III (2013-2014) Fellow in the Community Health and Prevention Section,
Public Health Initiatives Branch at the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health. She works under the guidance of preceptor Renee Coleman- Mitchell.
