As a member of the Coalition for Health Funding, DHPE is sharing this request – to say thank you for those who voted to end the government shutdown and avoid default. As a voting citizen, you can use your personal address, computer, etc. to contact legislators. You can adapt the sample letter and share local anecdotes, if appropriate.

NEW! NDD United Thank You Campaign

While we often find we're fighting various legislative plans and urging folks to vote NO on something, we need to remember to THANK those that do the right thing. We're hearing from many offices and Members of Congress themselves that they are being hounded and pounded by Tea Party folks (not just from their own district, but nationally) chastising them for their vote on HR 2775. They are urging them to continue to fight "Obamacare” by whatever means necessary, and saying "don't back down” on the next budget deal/CR.

Said one staffer for a moderate Republican: "They need to hear thank you and know that their vote was not for nothing – standing up to the pressure is very difficult.” The same is true for moderate Dems from red states. Said one red state senator, "We're being hammered by constituents about not staying strong and blocking Obamacare, raising the debt ceiling, and ending the shutdown. Messages of opposition are at a ratio of 100:1 for those supporting our decision. It's been really nasty, and staff are completely demoralized. If you want to see how bad it is, just visit any of our Facebook pages. Positive reinforcement right now will really help bolster courage as we enter into the next critical phase of negotiations.”

Thanking these moderatesis as important as making the argument for or against something.

The NDD Steering Committee has drafted a "thank you” template (attached below) for you to use in thanking Members of Congress who voted in favor of H.R. 2775, and urging them to "stand strong” when it comes to ending sequestration. We strongly urge you to share this message throughout your networks, and to send letters of thanks both from your organization and from your grassroots (through phone and/or email platforms). Of course, feel free to customize!

House roll call is here, and the Senate roll call is here.

The Coalition for Health Funding's thank you note—customized for public health—is posted online here.
