Howell Wechsler leaves CDC

DHPE congratulations Dr. Howell Wechsler who has been the Director of the Division of Adolescent and School Health at CDC has accepted the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, leaving CDC on May 20, 2013. John Moore, PhD, RN, will assume the duties of Acting Director of DASH beginning May 21. For the past 18 years, nine of those as the Division Director, Dr. Wechsler made significant contributions to CDC and to the mission of DASH in leading efforts to ensure the health and safety of our nation’s youth. He was lead author of CDC’s "Guidelines for School Health Programs to Promote Lifelong Healthy Eating," and also led the development of the "School Health Index: A Self-Assessment and Planning Guide." Dr. Wechsler successfully supervised and managed DASH's surveillance systems -- Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, School Health Policies and Practices, and School Health Profiles; numerous research and evaluation studies; evidence-based policies and practices for schools; and funding mechanisms and technical assistance to ensure state and local education agencies and national and non-government organizations have the tools necessary to successfully protect our Nation’s young people. Dr. Wechsler’s leadership ensured a smooth transition and solid mission for DASH as they joined NCHHSTP as a new Division.
