Being a DHPE intern has been one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had. I am currently pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Health Promotion minor in Community Health at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). Karen Thompkins, who manages the program, has always been there to answer all of my questions which I did have a lot. My placement site is with the City of El Paso Department of Public Health, and I just cannot find the words to describe how excellent my internship experience has been. I get paid for what I LOVE to do plus I am getting my professional experience which I think is the perfect path to start my professional career. Sue Beatty is my preceptor's name and she is just an amazing person to work with, she is always willing to help. Irma Carrillo is another great person that has impacted my life, she has been a wonderful and caring person, and she has taught me a lot of positive things that I will certainly use now and in my future. I attended the Shaping Policy for Health- Introduction to the Policy Change Process Training in Tallahassee, Florida on Wednesday March 27, 2013. I had the opportunity to meet my intern group which was really exciting. The training was very interactive and we got to do many activities together that helped us learn about problem definition, social-determinants of health and the importance of stakeholder involvement. Even though I had to leave the training early to catch my flight back to El Paso, I really enjoyed being there.
