DHPE Fellow Plans Health Literacy Workshop

Dakota LodgeThe Minnesota Department of Health's (MDH) Center for Health Promotion convened its first Health Literacy Workshop on March 28, 2013 the Dakota Lodge in West St. Paul, MN. Genelle Lamont, DHPE Fellow at MDH, planned this event as part of her fellowship activities. The workshop's purpose was to contribute to health equity through health literacy by enhancing individuals' and populations' understanding of health information and empowering them to act in ways to promote health. Over 75 people participated in this didactic, small and large group interactive workshop. Speakers included Marco Yzer, PhD, Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota School of Journalism and Mass Communications and Jennifer Dillaha, MD, Special Advisor for Strategic Initiatives at the Arkansas Department of Health. Also, the workshop included a breakout group activity moderated by Alisha Ellwood, Chair of the Minnesota Health Literacy Partnership and a panel discussion on communicating with diverse audiences moderated by Genelle Lamont. Don Bishop, DHPE member and Director of the Center of Health Promotion stated "this is a truly remarkable event and it would not have taken place without the Genelle's leadership and comment.”
