Duane McKinleyInterning at the DeKalb County Board of Health in the Office of Marketing and Business Development has given me the opportunity to expand my appreciation and understanding of the 7 core competencies of health education and ten essential public health services. My preceptor, Vickie Elisa, along with countless others, has created an environment that allows me to effectively apply the knowledge that I gained throughout my Master's of Public Health coursework.

While at the Board of Health, I have had the opportunity to work on several projects. Many of my initial projects required that I contribute to the planning and implementation of a multimedia health education program entitled PHIT (Public Health Information for Teens). My work with this health promotion tool required that I research potential corporate sponsors and develop a report that assessed each potential sponsors' giving practices. Furthermore, I actively participated in meetings with corporate entities, such as Fox Sports South and the Atlanta Hawks. I also prepared a report and summary of a phone briefing with a federal council to demonstrate how PHIT could be repositioned in the future.

Outside of PHIT, I will have the opportunity to assess DeKalb's health as an administrator of the Youth Behavioral Risk Survey. Additionally, I was extended the opportunity to write an article for the employee wellness newsletter.

To complement my field experience, the Directors of Health Promotion and Education provided weekly webinars. Many of these webinars centered on professional development topics including resume writing, cover letter construction, and logic model development. Other webinars worked to develop our understanding of health equity issues and challenged us to carefully consider the social determinants of health and policies that affect our communities.

I am thankful to Karen Thompkins, DHPE internship program staff, Vickie Elisa and DeKalb District Health Director, Dr. S. Elizabeth Ford for placing me in position to become an effective public health professional.

This April, Duane McKinley will be graduating with a Master of Public Health in Behavioral Science and Health Education from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in Tallahassee, FL. To learn more about PHIT, visit www.dekalbhealth.net/phit .
