Interning at the DeKalb County Board of Health in the
Office of Marketing and Business Development has given me the opportunity to
expand my appreciation and understanding of the 7 core competencies of health education
and ten essential public health services.
My preceptor, Vickie Elisa, along with countless others, has created an
environment that allows me to effectively apply the knowledge that I gained throughout

Outside of PHIT, I will have the opportunity to assess
DeKalb's health as an administrator of the Youth Behavioral Risk Survey.
Additionally, I was extended the opportunity
to write an article for the employee wellness newsletter.
To complement my field experience, the Directors of
Health Promotion and Education provided weekly webinars.
Many of these webinars centered on
professional development topics including resume writing, cover letter
construction, and logic model development.
Other webinars worked to develop our understanding of health equity issues
and challenged us to carefully consider the social determinants of health and
policies that affect our communities.
I am thankful to Karen Thompkins, DHPE internship
program staff, Vickie Elisa and DeKalb District Health Director, Dr. S.
Elizabeth Ford for placing me in position to become an effective public health
