January 2013 started off with our first training being held in Frankfort, Kentucky on January 9th. In an effort to help ensure that the states with the highest burden of disease and limited resources to address the health inequity, DHPE worked with Kentucky Department of Health Chronic Disease Prevention Program to bring Shaping Policy for Health to Kentucky to health department staff, coalition members, and partners. Kentucky was one of the 5 states chosen as a "high burden” state along with Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Oklahoma.

The first course presented was Introduction to the Policy Change Process which was held in Frankfort, KY. There were 26 attendees. Sue Thomas-Cox, Branch Manager Chronic Disease Prevention at the Kentucky Department for Public Health, and Bonita Bobo, who is the Project Director for the Coordinated Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion state planning process, hosted the training.

The course was trained by Karen Krzanowski, M.A., M.P.H., P.E.M. and Carolyn Thompson, MA from our SPH™ National Cadre of Trainers. Carolyn said that "The Kentucky group was enthusiastic knowledgeable, and very receptive to the training content. They are looking forward to DHPE returning to deliver skills building courses in the near future. It was a very positive experience. I thoroughly enjoyed the Kentucky hospitality!!!!".
