On Friday the Department of Health and Human Services released its draft mid-course update to the Physical Activity Guidelines, which was published in the Federal Register for public comment. The report, prepared by a subcommittee of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition (PCFSN), contains a literature review of research on physical activity intervention strategies that have been effective for 3-17 year olds in various settings and includes a discussion of suggested areas for future research. The report does not include recommendations specifically for children younger than 6, but, in response to new science regarding physical activity among children, does address intervention strategies for the preschool/childcare setting.

Comments on the draft report must be submitted by 9 am December 10. The American Heart Association, in conjunction with its partners at the National Coalition to Promote Physical Activity, will be developing model comments. If you are interested in submitting comments and would like to use the model comments, please contact Kristy Anderson at .
