This summer, the Ohio Department of Health (ODH), with support from the Ohio Public Health Training Center, hosted four (4) Shaping Policy for Health ™ trainings in Columbus, Ohio to build on the "Introduction to the Policy Change Process” course held in August 2011.

There were two (2) Course 1: "Assessing and Framing the Policy Problem” trainings and two (2) Course 2: "Using Policy Analysis Tools” trainings. Fifty-four persons attended Course 1 and 44 attended Course 2. The evaluation of comments from Course 1 participants stated that they "found the workshop's lessons on problem definition and boundary setting helpful to their work”. Others stated that they "felt more confident in strategically defining a problem to suit their particular program needs”.

Course 2 participants felt that the information gained through this workshop helped them to have "new strategies for working productively with coalitions and stakeholders in their communities”. Others stated that "they planned to consider the core values of all stakeholders when conducting policy analyses and when engaging in issue messaging”. Some participants said that "they gained a greater awareness of the values of others and the importance of message framing”.

The ODH is looking forward to hosting Course 3: "Influencing the Policy Change Process” and Course 4: "Implementing Enacted Policies” in the spring and summer of 2013. Below are a few pictures from Ohio's initial training experience:
