Susan GoeklerOn Wednesday July 25, 2012 DHPE joined the Coalition for Health Funding and representatives from other organizations to attend the Capitol Hill rally urging Congress to take action to avoid sequestration scheduled to take place in January 2013. The event was organized by Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA). The rally specifically addressed the non-defense discretionary programs under the jurisdiction of his committee, the Senate Subcommittee on Labor, HHS, and Education Appropriations. "So far we've heard a great deal about sequestration's effects on Pentagon spending,” Harkin said. The rally was the same afternoon Sen. Harkin released a report detailing how sequestration would affect public health sector, including food safety, medical research, transportation and family planning as well as other non-defense programs that receive discretionary federal funding. According to the report, each non-defense discretionary program included in sequestration could face across-the-board cuts of nearly 8 percent. As a result, more than 650,000 fewer people would be tested for HIV, nearly 50,000 fewer women would be screened for cancer and more than 200,000 fewer children would be vaccinated. In addition to Sen. Harkin, the Members of Congress who spoke at the rally were Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) and Rep. George Miller (D-CA) who is the ranking Democrat on the House Education and the Workforce Committee. Susan Goekler, Executive Director of DHPE along with a summer intern were in the crowd holding up signs that read, "Think before you cut”, "Healthy People Living, Working & Playing in Healthy Communities=Healthy Economy”, "Take a Balanced Approach To Deficit Reduction.”
