Meeting Agenda
The meeting was conducted September 24 and 25, 1998. On the first day, presentation-based sessions gave researchers an opportunity to present their work and set the stage for a group discussion. To guide the discussions, Dr. Sleet presented participants with a series of trigger questions. Session topics and their corresponding discussion questions are listed below.
Behavioral Science Theory and Injury
What have we learned looking at theory or interventions? How can theories be integrated? What are some promising models in intervention research? How do theories guide what data are collected? What are the barriers to implementing theoretically based interventions? What theories (e.g. Health Belief Model, Stages of Change, Protection Motivation) can be used?
Problem Behavior, Social Ecology, and Behavior Modification
Problem behavior theory, intervention development, incentives, behavior modification, individual and social controls, social ecology. What are the potentials for adapting these methods and strategies to motor vehicle injury control and other areas? What research issues do these approaches stimulate? What additional issues need resolving?
Health Education and Health Promotion: Evidence-Based Efforts
UK, Canada and the US efforts to document effects of health education. Reasons for failure, intervention and evaluation designs, delivery and dose, characteristics of successful programs. Negative attitudes toward "education" in injury prevention. Why have health education/promotion methods been successful in other lifestyle change programs, but not in injury? What are the implementation lessons learned from currently conducted and published research? What are some possible remedies?
Behavioral Science Applications in Pediatric Psychology
What have we learned? What has worked? What are some of the unique approaches taken with children? With adolescents? What methods, theories and approaches have led to favorable results? How generalizable are these results to other injury issues?
Other populations? How have developmental and pediatric psychologists forged
collaborative relationships to improve the research climate?
Behavioral Science and Health Communications
What are the issues around health risk communication? How do these issues influence our thinking about unintentional injuries? What is the role of mass media in injury prevention? What are the important research issues related to message development, targeting, tailoring, delivery/dissemination. How can adoption/diffusion theory be used? What expertise is needed from health communications to more appropriately deliver injury prevention messages?
