Picture of DHPE logoInfectious Disease Internet Resources

A superb resource for information on infectious diseases. Contains up-to-date information about nearly a hundred different diseases, including new and reemerging illnesses. For many of these, this site also provides fact sheets that can be downloaded, images of the infectious agents, and links to other useful resources. Also provides a search engine and helpful information on travelers’ health.

In addition to information on NFID activities and publications, this site provides general information on infectious diseases and fact sheets on numerous specific diseases. Has useful links to other sites.

This site is most useful for information on NIAID-sponsored research. For example, under "Research Activities" you will find the Lyme Disease Advisory Panel Summary Report. Also browse the news releases for timely research news.

Data

Provides (mostly national) data about a number of infectious diseases using the "FASTATS" option. (For example, in 1994 there were 170 million bed days due to flu and 26% of the US population was vaccinated against Hepatitis B.) This site will also search the web files of up to 14 different federal agencies for specific statistical information for you.

Provides morbidity and mortality tables by year, week and location. Also provides case definitions for all infectious diseases under public surveillance and allows visitors to search MMWR publications from 1993 to the present.

Food-Borne Disease

Click first on "Agencies" and then "Food Safety and Inspection Service" to access a wide variety of information including the Food Safety Educator newsletter, the USDA/FDA Illness Education Information Center, reports on consumer behavior, planning guides for Food Safety Education Month, information on product recalls and more.

The web site of the Partnership for Food Safety Education, a unique coalition of industry, government and consumer groups created to reduce the incidence of foodborne illness by educating Americans about safe food handling practices. Provides general information, educational artwork (including a chart of least wanted foodborne pathogens), prevention tips, and many useful hot links.

The US FDA provides general information on food safety, information about the National Food Safety Initiative, links to other helpful sites, and special information for kids and educators, including a downloadable food safety coloring book.

HIV/AIDS

This site serves as a gateway to general and technical information on HIV/AIDS. The site itself has a) general information on HIV/AIDS, b) basic statistics (presented by state, mode of exposure, age group, sex, etc.), c) downloadable slides and graphics, and d) lists of publications, conferences, and funding opportunities. You can also call the CDC National AIDS Clearinghouse at 1-800-458-5231 for information, materials, and general referral services

Check out this site’s JAMA HIV/AIDS information center. It contains timely news articles, excerpts from the scientific literature, treatment guidelines, prevention facts/references, policy information, patient education information, and "Best of the Net," a listing of selected internet resources.

Immunizations

From this site you can download the current recommended immunization schedules for children and adults, as well as the latest issue of Immunization Action News. Under "Announcements," this site lists recent media stories related to vaccine-preventable illness and CDC’s response.

Accessible from the NIP home page, this site lists detailed information about the VFC program and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. It includes several maps and tables with VFC program information broken out by state.

From this site you can download adult and adolescent immunization schedules, identify state and local agencies with whom you might collaborate on adult immunization programs, access a speaker referral service, and order items (which currently include consumer education materials, the 1998 Resource Guide for Adult and Adolescent Immunization, and a National Adult Immunization Awareness Week campaign kit).

Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Provides downloadable STD fact sheets, a selection of recently published articles on STDs, guidelines for the treatment of STDs, publications on STDs which can be downloaded or viewed on-line (e.g., 1996 STD Surveillance Report and What We Have Learned: 1990-1995), and links to other sites.

This site is notable for its "Sexual Health Glossary," which explains medical and technical terminology related to STDs, its comprehensive list of links, and its on-line educational brochures.
