Power Point | PDF

Communicating health benefits and risks is both critical and challenging for public health professionals.  One major communication barrier is low health literacy – the ability to comprehend and act upon health information.  An estimated 88 percent of adult Americans do not have proficient health literacy skills needed to make important individual and family health choices.

To meet this rising challenge, state health departments need a workforce dedicated to building skills in plain language and health literacy principles.  Learn about the Minnesota Department of Health’s first Health Literacy Workshop hosted by the Center for Health Promotion, lessons learned from leading health experts and how state health departments can operationalize health literacy strategies.

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
1. Describe health literacy within a public health context.
2. Relay the importance of addressing health literacy in public health.
3. List strategies for starting a health literacy initiative at a state department of health.
